                    The Ju-88 was the workhorse of the Luftwaffe. The Luftwaffe produced over 16,000 airframes. Of those, over 9,000 were used in a bomber role.  No other Third Reich bomber comes close in numbers.  The Ju-88 airframe flew in several roles, but perhaps the oddest use was in the role of a guided bomb.  Ju-88’s were mated with a fighter like the Bf-109 on top.  The Mistel (Mistletoe), the name of the mated pair, flew to the target site.  The fighter would uncouple, and then the Ju-88 would be guided into the target.  The Luftwaffe had 250 Mistels built.  Of those, an unknown number meet with limited success in combat.
