Army Chief of Staff General Shinseki has ordered a study to determine if the Future Combat System could be deployed by 2008 or 2010 instead of the current plan of 2012. The FCS is intended to be a 20-ton vehicle that is just as lethal and survivable as current tanks, but easier to fly to overseas theaters. Shinseki had already ordered the FCS brought forward from 2025 to 2012 after it proved difficult to deploy Army forces to Albania during the Kosovo War.--Stephen V Cole
