Poland plans to provide mobile air defense for its ground forces by mounting German Atlas Electronics ASRAD launchers on BRDM armored cars. (Poland has refitted its BRDMs, replacing the gasoline engine with a European diesel and removing the small center wheels to increase hull volume and provide space for doors on either side.) The German ASRAD system mounts four Stinger missiles; the Poles have demanded that ASRAD be modified so that it can also use Russian SA-16s or SA-18s. The vehicle will rely on a radar carried by a second BRDM to alert it to potential targets.--Stephen V Cole
